COURSE OUTLINE

What it’s about: An educator-focused workshop exploring a simple but powerful idea — children are better able to regulate, learn and respond to guidance when they feel safe and connected. Grounded in educational neuroscience, this course looks at what happens in the developing brain and nervous system during stress, why relationships matter so much, and how educators can use connection as a practical foundation for supporting behaviour.

What you’ll learn:

  • Why connection comes first — connection supports felt safety, safety supports regulation, and regulation supports learning and behaviour
  • The brain under stress — how fight/flight/freeze activates, and why language and reasoning become harder when stress is high
  • The social brain — how facial expression, tone and posture shape a child’s sense of safety
  • Attachment theory — why secure relationships support independence rather than dependence
  • The Still Face Experiment — how strongly young children rely on responsive adults
  • Separation anxiety — why it’s a stress response, not defiance, and how trauma, loss, inconsistency or neglect can intensify it
  • How to respond when separation is hard — the role of educators as trusted relational anchors, and strategies that build safety (slow separations, clear goodbyes, acknowledging feelings, offering choice)
  • What “connection before correction” looks like in practice — attune before you instruct, regulate before you redirect, relationship before rules
  • Important human needs — competence, autonomy and relatedness, and how they show up in behaviour
  • Reframing challenging behaviour — from “what’s wrong with this child?” to “what’s happening for this child?”
  • How connection builds capacity over time — regulation, resilience and independence through repeated experiences of safety
  • Creating environments where children can thrive — predictability, recovery, belonging and safety

Format: Video workshop with real-life demonstrations and downloadable resources included with the course.
