COURSE OUTLINE – Supporting Oral Language Through Everyday Interactions

A practical, evidence-based course for parents, educators and professionals on supporting oral language in the early childhood years. Learn how children really learn language — through responsive, back-and-forth interactions, not testing — and how to use five simple strategies during the everyday moments you’re already sharing (meals, dressing, bath time, books, songs and play). No expensive resources or extra activities needed.

What you’ll learn:

  • Why oral language matters — language underpins understanding, relationships, regulation, behaviour and literacy
  • How children actually learn language — through responsive interactions, not questioning or testing
  • The Language Loop™ — the simple framework at the heart of every effective language strategy, and why “every loop builds language”
  • Myth vs. reality — why questions aren’t the best teacher, and why everyday routines are enough
  • Serve and return — how back-and-forth interactions strengthen language and neural pathways
  • Communication = more than words — responding to looks, gestures, sounds, signs and AAC, with a neurodiversity-affirming approach
  • 5 ways to strengthen the Language Loop:
  • Follow the child’s lead — connect by joining their world and sharing joint attention
  • Observe, Wait, Listen (OWL) — notice, pause for longer than feels natural, and listen beyond words
  • Comment more than you question — “teach, don’t test,” with a 3 comments to 1 question rule of thumb
  • Expand their communication by adding more words — model language just above their current level
  • Build language into everyday routines — mealtimes, bath, dressing, transitions, shopping, bedtime
  • Boost your books — responsive reading strategies for early communicators and older children
  • Songs, rhymes and people games — predictable routines that create turn-taking and participation
  • How language changes across development — from first words to storytelling, and how the strategies stay the same
  • Common mistakes we all make — and how small changes over time make a big difference
  • When to seek support from a speech pathologist (clear red flags)

Format: Video course with real-life demonstrations, downloadable resources and a weekly language challenge / action plan included with the course.
